As the need for non-renewable sources deepens, we imagine a dystopian land of survival in a post climate crisis world. We seek to protect ourselves and fight against it with anarchic fervour, while disturbing aesthetics and unexpected beauty emerge from the toxicity. Blackened and dirty hues of glossy Crude Oil and Deep Swamp combine with sulphurous Toxic Yellow.

Class of 2022 • A great afternoon at Central Sai Class of 2022 • A great afternoon at Central Saint Martins Graduate show yesterday, so pleased to see the physical graduate shows back after a 2 year hiatus.

Here are some BA & MA graduates that caught out eye, see more snippets on our stories later for more emerging designers to watch:

1. @maluluecking - ‘Landless Food’ is a project that proposes a regeneration of of humanity’s food system. Strains of micro-algae have been cultivated into edible gel-like objects.

2. @well_al_be - ‘Kelp Commons’ advocates regenerative kelp farming as a catalyst for improved ecological resilience.

3. @mireillesteinhage - ‘Power People’ is a proposed series of solar-powered products for sustainable, self-sufficient living that is accessible for everyone. The first product is a foldable & portable heated blanket.

4. @ismayblythdeegan - ‘Collections of the Lost & Found’ is a collection of sustainable textiles made with recycled sari and ribbon yarns or natural dyes.

5. @ragtagtextiledesign - These ‘Links’ pieces are based on traditional knitting techniques of boat fenders, designed to be versatile and adaptable to be worn in multiple ways.

6. @jadlerdesign - ‘Alchemical Mycology’ explores extracting pigments from fungi as renewable alternatives to traditional colourants. Illustrated through a bold make-up collection.

Is this the future of retail? • As shopping and Is this the future of retail? • As shopping and digital experiences threaten to take over from IRL retail, injecting humour, creativity and fun is vital.

The new @marni store in Milan does just this, reinvigorating it’s store interior to revive physical engagement and creative inspiration. The 3-floor flagship, unveiled during @milan.design.week, featured playful details and a colourful and furry installation conceptualised by @shoplifterart. Reflective silver clad walls and ceilings and fluid clothes railings are punctuated with neon lights and bright flowers and vintage modular seating for a futuristic retro aesthetic. The spotlight is taken by the interiors but this only accentuates the clothes, creating an inspiring space to shop.

The role of consumption enters a new era which sees frivolity and humour combine with conscience and awareness of wastefulness. A renewed appreciation for food sees us create with it, wear it and celebrate its imperfections. While new attitudes to food waste and fermentation see subversive approaches, as we find beauty in the parts of nature often rejected or preconceived as ugly. Compost and decay become artistic expressions and a celebration of colour.

Colour Blocked • Baovan, the first bao restauran Colour Blocked • Baovan, the first bao restaurant in Valencia, has been designed by @weareclapstudio to reflect the city’s beachside culture and the adventurousness of travel. The colourful dining interior embodies the surf-and-explore lifestyle of @baovanfoodxp founders, using colour to divide the space into three areas: a ‘forest’ – a ceilinged porch with hanging ropes symbolizing dense vegetation – a beach, and its sunset.

Spring has definitely been a busy season for NFT and Web3-related events. I have visited several of them and want to share the key takeaways!

1. To celebrate the new frontier for the creative industries, the metaverse, event masterminds Telekom Electronic Beats and multidisciplinary Trashymuse have launched a collaborative NFT.

2. Vogue Business, Yahoo, and Dept hosted a first-of-its-kind Metaverse experience to explore fashion’s new terrain.

3. Decentraland hosted the first Metaverse Fashion Week with virtual shows, showroom openings, and other special events. 

4. Luxury retailer Selfridges unveiled the first meta department store in the history of Web3.

5. Italian brand Dolce & Gabbana debuted a digital collection of logo-heavy looks exhibited on feline-like models. 

6. Non-Fungible Conference in Lisbon offered a hybrid experience for their visitors via a tailor-made 3D environment. 

7. Zeitguised, Studio PMS and The Fabricant are exhibiting digital fashion innovations in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht.

8. Fashion and Luxury NFTs take center stage at Decentral Art Pavilion in Venice.

Swedish interior design studio @bang_universe have Swedish interior design studio @bang_universe have released their first furniture collection, titled Bang Paper. A series of furniture and interior objects, the collection is made only out of recycled paper tubes, with all parts assembled completely without screws or tools.

The studio describes the pieces as “personal exclamation marks that leave as little climate footprint as possible” and will launch them exclusively @stockholmcreativeedition Design festival.
